Why Non-Profits? Well, I have always had a strong urge to give back to the community in some way. I also like creating something from scratch and getting it going. The skills you develop while working on a board are invaluable. You can really develop skills that you may normally not have a chance to while working on a job. In addition, you get so much back. You can get involved with projects that really interest you. And when you accomplish a task that has a large impact in some way, it can be very satisfying. I think making the time to do non-profit work can only enhance who you are as a person and also give you a chance to polish other skills.
At present, I have limited my involvement with non-profits because of other personal interests. I am currently on the board of advisors for the North Texas Council of Hostelling International and also their web designer. In addition, I'm vice-president of the Finnish/American Society (Texfinns) in Dallas/Ft. Worth and on the board for the Finnish Independence Day Gala held in Irving during December, managing the corporate sponsorship and finance functions.
I have been involved with a number of non-profit organizations:
- Was a founding member and active board member for five years for the North Texas Global Telecommunication Society (NTGTS) as director of corporate development and director of special events.
- Been an active board member for six years with the North Texas Council of Hostelling International as past president, treasurer and vice-president.
- Was a past participant of Toastmasters International for over four years where I earned the competent toastmaster and competent leader status.
- Graduated from the Dallas Opera’s Distinguished Audiences and Advanced Classes.
In addition, I have been an active member of: - the 500 Inc.
- the International Professional League
- the Society for Technical Communication
- and a past board member of the International Trade Association of D/FW.
